Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved an ambitious plan for the holistic development of Vidur Kuti, a historic site in Bijnor district linked to the Mahabharata era. The project, with an estimated budget of ₹20 crore, aims to transform Vidur Kuti into a prominent destination under the state’s Mahabharata Circuit.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh informed that Vidur Kuti, associated with the great statesman Mahatma Vidur of the Kuru dynasty, holds immense religious and cultural significance. The government is committed to preserving this heritage while equipping the site with modern facilities for visitors. Planned developments include a grand entrance gate, landscaping, lighting, information centers, rest areas, drinking water, and sanitation facilities.
The minister emphasized that the project will not only promote religious tourism but also create local employment opportunities. Bijnor’s ODOP (One District, One Product) initiative of wood carving will receive a boost, strengthening the local economy and artisans’ livelihoods while showcasing cultural heritage on a global stage.

Highlighting the district’s eco-tourism potential, Singh pointed out that Amangarh Tiger Reserve and Haiderpur Wetland are already attracting wildlife and nature lovers. Spread over 95 sq km, Amangarh is home to tigers and several rare species, while Haiderpur Wetland is a paradise for migratory birds and birdwatchers. Affordable homestays run under the tourism department further enhance the experience.

Vidur Kuti also carries deep mythological relevance. It is believed that after his counsel to King Dhritarashtra was ignored, Mahatma Vidur renounced Hastinapur and settled on the banks of the Ganga. Lord Krishna himself is said to have visited Vidur Kuti during the Mahabharata period. The footprints of Vidur, preserved on marble, continue to draw large numbers of devotees, and his timeless Vidur Niti, like Chanakya Niti, remains influential in Indian thought.
Minister Jaiveer Singh concluded that the project will place Bijnor prominently on the national and international tourism map, offering a blend of history, spirituality, culture, and eco-tourism.
