Uttar Pradesh to Launch Modern ‘Balvatikas’ in 5,118 Schools Under NEP-2020

Lucknow In a major step towards strengthening early childhood education, the Uttar Pradesh government is set to inaugurate modern Balvatikas in 5,118 state-run schools under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These vibrant, child-friendly spaces will cater to children aged 3 to 6 years, ensuring they are mentally and socially prepared before entering Grade 1. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (ICDS), includes the relocation of nearby Anganwadi centers into these upgraded school facilities.

“Laying a Strong Foundation for the Future”
Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said the Balvatikas are designed to provide nutrition, a safe environment, and joyful learning, laying a strong foundation for children’s futures. “Our aim is that every child enters Grade 1 fully ready — mentally, socially, and emotionally,” he said.

Facilities for Holistic Development
Each Balvatika will feature child-friendly furniture, outdoor play equipment, colorful classrooms, dedicated learning corners, and BaLA (Building as Learning Aid) features. Children will have access to activity-based learning kits like the “Wonder Box,” workbooks, teaching-learning materials (TLM), and stationery. The state is also appointing Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) educators in phases to ensure high-quality, inclusive learning experiences.

Grand Independence Day Launch
The Balvatikas will become fully operational on Independence Day 2025, marked by grand celebrations. Schools will be freshly cleaned, painted, and decorated, with cultural programs including singing, dance, plays, and art competitions. Local representatives, community members, and especially parents will be invited to strengthen community participation in education.

Importance of Early Education
Director General of School Education, Kanchan Verma, emphasized that ages 3 to 6 are critical for a child’s mental, emotional, and social growth. “Completing the ‘school readiness’ stage ensures that children enter Grade 1 fully prepared to learn. NEP-2020 gives special importance to pre-primary education, and this initiative reflects that priority,” she said.

With this move, Uttar Pradesh aims to transform government schools into engaging, nurturing environments where learning begins with joy and community support plays a central role.
