Laos Sets Sights on Advancing Traditional Medicine Through Science and Sustainability

Vientiane | In a strategic effort to integrate heritage with innovation, the Ministry of Health in Laos has launched a renewed initiative to advance traditional medicine by blending ancient healing practices with modern science—aiming to spur economic growth, support poverty alleviation, and ensure environmental sustainability.

On Saturday, a high-level seminar was held in Vientiane, where government officials, medical professionals, and other stakeholders gathered to discuss the importance of preserving and modernizing Lao traditional medicine. The event was organized by the Centre of Information and Education for Health, under the Lao Ministry of Health.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the seminar focused on finding solutions to the existing challenges and gaps in conservation efforts, as well as building strategies to elevate traditional medicine as a credible and scientific healthcare alternative. Experts emphasized the critical role traditional medicine can play in community health delivery, especially in rural areas.

“Preserving these invaluable resources is key not only to healthcare access but also to the development of locally produced, high-quality medications,” a representative from the Health Ministry stated.

Aligning with National Health Priorities

Laos has officially recognized traditional medicine as a priority under its national health strategy, acknowledging its deep-rooted presence in communities and its potential to enhance public health outcomes.

On July 23, the Ministry of Health announced a new collaboration with the private sector to:

  • Protect endangered plant species used in traditional medicine
  • Boost the quality and output of medicinal products
  • Conduct scientific research for innovation in drug development

This partnership will also oversee the training of healthcare professionals, along with the research and processing of herbal products. The goal is to foster plant biodiversity and establish large-scale cultivation of medicinal plants for formula testing and mass production.

A Structured Path Forward

Both public and private stakeholders will contribute to a joint action plan, outlining responsibilities for research, development, conservation, and production. According to Lao Public Security Television, this initiative is a key move toward mainstreaming traditional medicine into Laos’ broader healthcare and economic framework.

As the world rediscovers the value of natural healing methods, Laos is positioning itself as a leader in integrating cultural heritage with cutting-edge science, proving that sustainability, wellness, and tradition can thrive together.
