Uttar Pradesh’s economic transformation: Yogi Adityanath’s Efforts Make Uttar Pradesh No. 1 in Domestic Tourism

Lucknow – Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in terms of domestic tourist footfall, thanks to the consistent efforts of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The state is setting new records with its surge in religious and cultural tourism, laying a strong foundation for long-term economic growth.

In 2023 alone, while India witnessed 1.88 crore international tourists, over 250 crore domestic trips were made—many of which led to spiritual hubs in northern India. Officials expect this number to rise sharply in the coming years, with cultural and religious destinations witnessing unprecedented traction. States like Uttar Pradesh, home to spiritual giants like Lord Ram, Krishna, Shiva, Buddha, and Guru Gorakhnath, are reaping the benefits.

As per the Ministry of Tourism, Uttar Pradesh has consistently topped domestic tourism charts in recent years.

Tourism to Boost Economy 3-4 Times in Next 5 Years

According to a 2024 report by the Association of India, hospitality and tourism are poised to contribute up to 10% of total employment over the next 5–7 years. The tourism sector is also projected to contribute up to 8% of India’s GDP, a significant jump from the current 2–3%. Much of this growth will be driven by religious tourism, which accounts for over 60% of all travel within India, according to data from the Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi Chamber of Commerce.

By 2032, the global religious tourism market is expected to exceed $2 billion, and India—particularly Uttar Pradesh—stands to gain the most due to its vast number of holy sites.

Massive Growth Already Visible

Uttar Pradesh is already witnessing the benefits:

  • Prayagraj Kumbh Mela saw over 66 crore pilgrims.
  • Varanasi, after the launch of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, went from 50 lakh to 6 crore annual visitors.
  • In Ayodhya, tourists grew from 2.83 lakh in 2016 to over 13.44 crore by September 2024.
  • Other major religious hubs like Vindhyachal, Chitrakoot, Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, and Govardhan are also seeing record footfall.

Hotel Industry to Need 1 Million More Rooms

With rising tourist numbers, India will need 10 lakh additional hotel rooms in the next 7 years, which could create over 35 lakh jobs—out of which 15–20 lakh will be in smaller towns. Major hotel chains are now eyeing Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities for expansion.

According to Bhavya Malhotra, a former banquet manager at ITC Maurya Delhi, “Every room requires at least 2–3 service staff members. If this staffing is not maintained, guest satisfaction and service quality decline significantly.”

Ripple Effects on Allied Sectors

The tourism boom is also boosting aviation, Indian Railways, road transport, logistics, and local artisans. With higher footfall, local products get a natural market—further supporting One District One Product (ODOP), one of CM Yogi’s flagship schemes.

Religious Tourism: A Cultural and Economic Catalyst

Religious tourism not only uplifts local economies but also promotes cultural exchange and infrastructure development. Governments are now focused on enhancing safety, connectivity, and visitor experience to tap into this momentum. Overall, it ensures the preservation of spiritual and cultural heritage while contributing significantly to economic progress.

As CM Yogi continues to focus on temple cities, tourism corridors, and global branding, Uttar Pradesh is not only securing its spiritual identity but also becoming a tourism-driven economic powerhouse.
