UP to Renovate Planetariums in Lucknow, Gorakhpur & Rampur to Spark Space Curiosity

Lucknow — The Uttar Pradesh government is set to breathe new life into its planetariums in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Rampur as part of a major push to promote astronomy and space science among the masses — especially the youth.

Over the past eight years, these three planetariums have drawn over 11.25 lakh visitors, underscoring growing public interest in celestial exploration. Now, a fresh chapter is on the horizon.

High-Tech Makeover for a Cosmic Experience

The Uttar Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (UPCST) has taken charge of the renovations, upgrading facilities with advanced digital systems, immersive domes, and visitor-friendly amenities. Once reopened, these centers promise a next-level stargazing and learning experience.

“Planetariums are not just recreational spots — they are incubators of scientific thinking,” said Sheeldhar Singh Yadav, Director of UPCST. “These upgrades will make astronomy more accessible and inspiring for students and enthusiasts across the state.”

What’s New at the Planetariums?

  • Lucknow: The iconic Indira Gandhi Planetarium, built in 1988, has been revamped at a cost of ₹40 crore. It now features a 15-meter dome equipped with state-of-the-art digital projection technology and is ready for grand reopening.

  • Gorakhpur: The Bir Bahadur Singh Planetarium, with its 17-meter dome, is currently under renovation, with completion expected soon.

  • Rampur: The Aryabhatta Planetarium is next in line, with refurbishment work slated to begin later this year.

A New Era of Space Learning

With cutting-edge visual storytelling and upgraded infrastructure, the renovated planetariums aim to become dynamic hubs for science education, astronomy outreach, and innovation. The initiative is also expected to align with the state’s broader educational goals, nurturing a scientifically curious generation.

Once reopened, these revamped centers will not only entertain but also empower minds to explore the cosmos — one show at a time.
