Lucknow: In a groundbreaking press conference held at the Lucknow Press Club, medical experts challenged conventional beliefs about diabetes and unveiled a bold new perspective on the condition. Organized under the banner of the Appropriate Diet Therapy Center, the event focused on the “Diabetes-Free India Mission” launched by Bharat Gaurav Award-winning scientist Dr. S. Kumar.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Varun, made a compelling statement: “Diabetes is not a disease but a sugar utilization disorder caused by lifestyle choices. It can be reversed without medicines or insulin through precise diagnostics and appropriate nutrition.”
Rewriting the Story of Diabetes
Dr. Varun traced the scientific evolution of diabetes, beginning with the 1921 discovery of insulin by Sir Frederick Banting and Charles Best. He explained how in 1936, Harold Himsworth classified diabetes into Type 1 and Type 2, and later in the 1970s, researchers like Jeffrey Flier and Harold Olefsky identified cellular receptor defects as key culprits behind insulin resistance.
Building on these findings, Dr. S. Kumar’s extensive research led to a startling revelation:
Nearly 90% of diabetes diagnoses are inaccurate, based solely on elevated blood sugar levels, despite patients having normal insulin levels. According to him, most cases are not due to a lack of insulin, but the body’s inability to utilize glucose effectively — a problem tied to insulin resistance.
The Real Culprit Lies in the Kitchen
Dr. Kumar attributes a large part of this insulin resistance to refined seed oils (such as soybean and sunflower oil), widely used in Indian kitchens. When these oils are heated, they release trans fats, AGEs (Advanced Glycation End-products), and over 30 harmful chemicals. These compounds:
-
Damage insulin receptors
-
Prevent glucose absorption into cells
-
Induce insulin resistance
-
Harm pancreatic beta cells
“If the disease originates in the kitchen, the cure should also begin there,” emphasized Dr. Varun.
A New Diagnostic Approach
Dr. Kumar has proposed that standard diabetes tests such as fasting blood sugar, post-meal sugar, and HbA1c levels are insufficient to determine the true diabetic status. Instead, he recommends a more holistic set of eight specialized tests, including:
-
Fasting Serum Insulin

-
C-Peptide
-
HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance)
-
Beta Cell Function
-
Insulin Sensitivity
-
And other key biomarkers
These tests, he said, can more accurately differentiate between true diabetes and temporary metabolic dysfunction.
A Mission Backed by Veterans
The conference also featured notable participation from the Indian Ex-Servicemen League (Lucknow chapter), including retired Subedar Major Rishi Dixit and R.B. Singh, who voiced strong support for the Diabetes-Free India Mission.
Dixit stated, “Our brave soldiers gave their lives for the nation. It is now our collective duty to safeguard the health of all citizens. This campaign led by Dr. Kumar is a matter of pride and hope.”
Empowering Through Diet, Not Drugs
Dr. Varun concluded the session with a powerful message:
“If a disorder is born out of poor nutrition, the solution lies in proper nutrition. It is time to move beyond dependency on insulin and pills and embrace diet-based therapy backed by scientific evidence.”
The press conference saw active participation from the team at the Appropriate Diet Therapy Center, including center in-charge Vinod Awasthi, dieticians Mamta Pandey and Alka Srivastava, and IT specialist Raj Kamal Tripathi, all of whom played key roles in organizing the event.
This initiative marks a significant shift in how diabetes is understood, diagnosed, and treated in India — from a chronic disease requiring lifelong medication to a lifestyle condition that can potentially be reversed through dietary discipline and accurate diagnostics.
