(Sitapur): A shocking incident has emerged from Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh, where Congress MP Rakesh Rathore has been arrested on charges of rape. The police apprehended him at his residence in Loharbaug. Prior to his arrest, Rathore was holding a press conference, during which he claimed that the allegations against him were politically motivated and expressed confidence that he would receive complete justice from the court.
Arrest During Press Conference
On Thursday around 1:30 PM, the police arrested Rakesh Rathore and took him to the Nagar Kotwali, where his statements were recorded. During the arrest, Rathore told the media that the accusations against him were politically motivated, particularly following his campaign related to a land dispute. He stated, “I have full faith in the court and God, and I believe I am innocent.”
Allegations from the Victim
According to the woman, she met Rakesh Rathore in 2018 when he was a legislator. Rathore promised to provide her a place in politics and later appointed her as the female president of an ethnic organisation. However, in 2020, Rathore allegedly called the woman to his home and raped her. When she protested, he threatened her, stating that if she resisted, he would file false charges against her to tarnish her reputation.
Media reports indicate that after becoming an MP, on August 24, 2024, Rathore allegedly called the woman to his home again and coerced her into signing a plain paper containing objectionable terms. The woman claimed that he also threatened her with harm, instilling fear in her.
Political Impact and Support
Following Rathore’s arrest, his supporters and family members gathered at the police station to express their support. Meanwhile, the police have begun questioning him and are preparing to present the case in court.
