Lucknow: The Urban Development Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh recently organized a comprehensive and strategic stakeholder consultation on the development of Old Age Homes. This meeting was an important step keeping in mind the changing needs of the senior citizens of the state. Led by Principal Secretary Amrit Abhijat and in the presence of Special Secretary Arun Prakash, the meeting was attended by experts, organizations and other stakeholders.
The meeting was attended by reputed organizations working on senior citizen care and community living. Those who attended physically included Ashiana Housing and Max Antara Senior Living, while Prestige Group, Columbia Pacific Communities, CovaCare and Edge Venture registered their participation through online medium. This diverse participation ensured a multifaceted discussion on the future of old age homes in Uttar Pradesh.
Holistic approach to old age homes
The main objective of this consultation was to develop guidelines and strategies that go beyond traditional housing and create a holistic environment. The discussion focused on creating such places that not only provide housing but also meet the physical, medical and mental needs of senior citizens. The participants deliberated on innovative approaches to design, health facilities, recreational activities and safety measures.

Principal Secretary Amrit Abhijat, while explaining the thinking of the department, said, “Our vision is not limited to just infrastructure. We are committed to creating such life ecosystems that provide respect, care and a sense of community to our senior citizens.

Important topics discussed
Topics such as design of old age homes, health care and welfare services, sustainability of long-term operations and protection of the rights of senior citizens were discussed in the meeting. Also, emphasis was laid on implementing best practices adopted at national and international level.
Exploring PPP Model
A major highlight of the meeting was exploring the possibilities of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This model will attempt to enhance the quality, efficiency and scalability of old age home projects in the state by combining government monitoring and private sector innovation. The discussion emphasized on creating a regulatory framework that encourages private sector participation and innovation while protecting the rights of senior citizens.
Future Plan
Based on the suggestions and experiences received from this meeting, the Urban Development Department is planning to formulate a comprehensive policy. This policy will be a blueprint to make old age homes not just a place to live but a community that provides dignity, respect and high quality care to the senior citizens of Uttar Pradesh.
