Bareilly: Sharing the mantra of how to keep cyber fraudsters at arm’s length, SP City Manush Parikh advised to make friends on social platforms thoughtfully. He said that when we do not make friends with unknown people in real life, then why do we make friends with someone on social platforms. These unknown people or links take advantage of us and later blackmail us. In such a situation, make friends only after thinking and never make your privacy public on social media platforms. And also refrain from sharing your daily activities on these platforms.
A workshop on cyber crime was organized at SRMS Medical College. In this, SP City Manush Parikh made the students of MBBS 2024 aware of cyber crime. He gave information about cyber security, social media along with case history. He said that in the 19th century, people in North India were terrorized by fraud. Today incidents like fraud, burglary, theft and robbery are also in front of us in the modern form of cyber crime.
Social media crime and financial crime come under this cyber crime. This is a crime committed through the internet and electronic devices. Cyber criminals are most active on social media platforms like email, WhatsApp, Facebook. They blackmail by luring with lottery, employment, gift, friendship or through cyber bullying, cyber stalking, cyber extortion and commit fraud by obtaining ATM or netbanking passwords.
They also steal money from the bank through OTP or UPI. To avoid this, internet and social platform applications should be used carefully. Never share your password, OTP with anyone. Do not click on unknown links and beware of such fake calls. Be more careful while downloading apps. While downloading, never give full access of the mobile to the app provider.
Do not give access to your gallery, contacts, mic and camera. Never download apps that provide loans. Do not make your privacy public on social platforms. Update two factor verification. Do not accept anyone’s friend request even on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram. There is a high possibility of unknown people being cyber criminals. Change the account settings of social media platforms and do not open your profile to the public. The number of cases of blackmailing through video calls on WhatsApp is also increasing. In such a situation, do not accept any video call. Yes, never use public WiFi. Switch off the WiFi of the house before sleeping at night and also turn off the internet of the mobile. If possible, it would be better if you switch off the mobile too. SP City warned the youth, especially girls, against cyber stalking. Said that never share videos and photos with anyone.
Do not be afraid if the photo or video is on an obscene site. Do complain about it in the cyber crime police station or online on DMCA.com. Complaint of creating fake social media profile can also be made on the Violation of Privacy website. In case of any kind of fraud or money being deducted, complain on helpline number 1930 and 1090 or complain online at cybercrime.gov.in. If the complaint is made within 24 hours, there is a higher chance of getting the money back. In the workshop, Medical Superintendent of Medical College Colonel (Retd.) Dr. RP Singh welcomed SP City Manush Parikh and presented him a memento. On this occasion, DSW Dr. Kranti Kumar and Office Superintendent Vineet Sharma were also present.
