Bareilly: Bareilly has once again emerged as a prominent destination on India’s sporting map with the grand inauguration of the 54th National Senior Women’s Handball Championship at Future University, Bareilly. The event was formally inaugurated by District Magistrate Avinash Singh and Cantonment MLA Sanjeev Agarwal amid great enthusiasm and sporting spirit.
The ceremony began on a traditional note, with the chief guests symbolically launching the tournament by scoring a goal. The gesture energized both players and spectators. The dignitaries later interacted with teams from various states, encouraging the participants.
Addressing the gathering, District Magistrate Avinash Singh highlighted the importance of sports in overall development, stating that sports not only promote physical fitness but also instill discipline, confidence, and teamwork. He emphasized that national-level competitions provide a vital platform for players to showcase their talent and progress further.
MLA Sanjeev Agarwal expressed pride in hosting such a prestigious tournament in Bareilly, noting that it inspires local athletes and boosts the city’s sporting culture.
Providing details about the event, Dr. Ashish Gupta, President of the District Olympic Association Bareilly, said this marks the third major national-level handball event hosted in the city, following the successful event of the Senior Championship in 2021 and the Junior Championship in 2023. He termed it a “hat-trick” achievement for Bareilly in organizing national sports events.
District Olympic Association Treasurer Dr. Swatantra Kumar emphasized that the championship showcases the strength and talent of women athletes from across the country, sending a strong message of women empowerment through sports. He added that the association, along with the Indian Handball Association, is fully committed to ensuring the smooth conduct of the tournament.

The championship is being held from March 30 to April 3, 2026, featuring participation from around 27 teams representing different states. Several national and international-level players are competing, promising high-quality and thrilling matches.
Organizers have ensured top-class arrangements for players, including accommodation, food, security, medical facilities, and transportation, along with adequate seating and amenities for spectators.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Anandeshwar Pandey, Executive President of the Indian Handball Association. The event committee and district administration are working diligently to ensure the success of the event.
The championship has generated significant excitement among local sports enthusiasts, with large crowds attending the matches and cheering for the players. Organizers believe that such events will further strengthen Bareilly’s identity as a growing hub for national sports and open doors for even bigger tournaments in the future.
