Lucknow: The real reason behind the recurring sewer overflows in the Bhoothnath Market area of Indira Nagar is a sewer line laid by the Housing Development Department approximately 50 years ago, which has become damaged. This is obstructing the flow of sewage and causing the overflows.

To resolve the problem, Suez is laying a new 210-meter-long, 800 mm diameter trenchless sewer line in the area. However, the work is not easy. The main trunk sewer line runs just one foot away from the plots of local residents, whereas according to regulations, such a line should be located in the middle of the road.
Furthermore, several local shopkeepers have built their shops directly over the sewer line, creating significant obstacles to repair work and the laying of the new line. This trunk line carries sewage from Indira Nagar, Maithili Sharan, and Lal Bahadur Shastri-1 wards, further increasing the pressure on the system.

To control the overflow situation, Suez has installed pumps at Sai Temple, Nilgiri Chowk, and Kaleva Chowk, which are operating continuously. Due to the higher sewage load during morning and evening hours, overflows sometimes still occur.
Suez Network Manager Rajneesh Sharma says that once the new trenchless sewer line is completed, the Bhoothnath Market area will get permanent relief, and the long-standing sewer problem will be resolved.
