30-Day Kathak Workshop Begins Under Birju Maharaj Kathak Sansthan

Lucknow: The Birju Maharaj Kathak Sansthan, under the Department of Culture, Government of Uttar Pradesh, has launched a 30-day Kathak dance workshop in Lucknow, commencing on May 14, 2025. The initiative aims to promote and popularise the classical dance form of Kathak.

The workshop is being held under the guidance of the institution’s esteemed Chairperson, Dr. Kumkum Dhar, and is conducted by renowned Kathak trainer, Dr. Upasana Dixit.

Approximately 30–35 participants, aged five and above, have enthusiastically enrolled for the workshop so far. The group includes not only young boys and girls but also working professionals, government and non-government employees, as well as retired individuals—all drawn by their keen interest in the classical dance form.

Held every day from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the workshop began with an orientation session, where participants were introduced to the fundamentals and stylistic nuances of Kathak by the trainer. The session focused on developing a foundational understanding of the art form before progressing into practical dance instruction.

The admission process is still ongoing. Interested candidates can apply on working days by collecting the application form from the Sansthan office. The admission fee is nominally set at ₹100, while the training fee is ₹600 for the entire duration of the workshop.

This culturally enriching initiative is being hailed as an excellent opportunity for both novices and enthusiasts to immerse themselves in one of India’s most revered classical dance traditions.
